November 2019 This will be our 5th official drive.
It's November! This year I am collecting Coloring Books and Crayons for Doernbecher. I was told during my hospital stay in September that they are out of Coloring Books and Crayons. The drive will be running approximately from 11/4-12/12. I am also taking check or money donations to be used solely to buy gift-cards.
My Public drop sites will be at: Sonrise Church- 6701 NE Campus Dr. Hillsboro, OR 97124 Forest Grove Liquor Store- 3130 Pacific Ave, Forest Grove, OR 97116 Cornell Estates- 1005 NE 17th Ave, Hillsboro, OR 97124 (Starting 11/5) Insomnia Coffee Co.- 317 E Main St, Hillsboro, OR 97123 (Starting 11/5) Madison is busy with her job and school but told me she will help me too. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am hoping that the Hospital can get a big donation when delivered in the middle of December. Thank-you
Colors 4 Kiddos to this date has collected: more than 2,500 coloring books; more than 2,500 sets of crayons; 10+ boxes full of school supplies; 2 donations of beautifully quilted book bags; 250 board games; over 100 DVD's; 2 large wagons; 4 kindles; a playhouse & several Barnes & Noble gift cards donated and bought with donated money. When Colors 4 Kiddos has delivered the donations they have gone to several areas in the hospital. They have taken coloring books and crayons to the Main OHSU hospital lobby, the Doernbecher Pediatric Emergency Department (located next to the ER in the main OHSU hospital), the 7th floor CDRC (a floor in the hospital that has clinics in many different medical areas), the 8th floor PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care unit-where both Madison and Jake have both stayed in the past) and the Pediatric surgical waiting area and the 9th floor where they both spent the majority of our time on both the surgical care side “under the moon” and the acute care side “under the sun”. Colors 4 Kiddos also delivers donations to the two school classrooms to be used on the 9th and 10th floors.
BACKGROUND ABOUT THE DRIVE: ~2011-2012: Madison spent 49 days in the hospital during the holidays in 2012, she decided that a coloring book and crayon drive would be a great way to give back.
~2014: After a couple of more hospitalizations, Madison decided that for her Senior Project, she would bring back Colors 4 Kiddos.
~2016: After Madison spent 40 days in the hospital over the summer/fall, she thought it would be a good idea to collect coloring books and crayons again to be able to donate right before the holidays. It brings many smiles over both the holidays and also into the new year. ~2017: During Jake’s 10 day stay in June there continued to be a need for coloring books & crayons. We had several cash and check donations that bought Barnes & Noble gift cards that were taken in the spring to Heidi, the head teacher. ~2018: During Jake’s 10 stay in September he was able to attend a couple days of school. The school is a nice and safe feeling place. He was able to go for a couple of hours a day. Even though he didn’t feel good the teacher Heidi was convincing and encouraged him to go by wheelchair one day and to walk down to school the next day. ~2019: During Jake’s stays in January and September he realized how the drive impacts the hospital. He decided he would bring Colors 4 Kiddos back as his Senior Project.
